This week I finally recorded my apartment tour! I’m nowhere near being done with decorating but seeing how I’ve already lived here for two months now, I figured if I didn’t do it now, it probably wouldn’t happen. I realized as I was recording that sharing your personal ‘safe space’ is very intimate. So rather than just show you my space, I decided to also share ten facts that came up along the way. I didn’t go into great detail during the video so I’ll do that here!
Fact #1: I cannot keep plants alive.
This is very upsetting for me because I love having plants in my space. I think they provide so many health benefits and just being around nature can instantly improve your mood…unless you’re constantly accidentally killing it. I’m not sure what it is, I water them, I put them out in the sun, I give them words of affirmation daily, but without fail they ALWAYS die. So I surround myself with fake plants to give the allusion of nature and call it a day. The only living plants in my apartment are a few Tillandsia plants aka air plants. These do not need soil to grow and are extremely low maintenance. Simply sprits with water every once in a while and make sure they receive a little bit of sun! My other “living” plant, (I’ll use this term loosely because it only lasts a week if I’m lucky) is a bouquet of flowers I buy every Sunday from the Farmer’s Market. I can typically keep it looking half decent for the week but it’s definitely struggling by Saturday.
Fact #2: Peeing in the shower is the greatest thing in the world.
If you disagree with this I’m simply going to assume that you’re a liar. Some people try to down play it and say, “well, yeah, if I have to go while I’m showering I won’t get out.” This isn’t the case for me. I will literally hold my pee until I have to get into the shower because it’s so much better than using a toilet. Not to mention environmentally friendly and time effective. If you don’t own up to this pleasure, chill out and own it and if you really don’t do it, I don’t trust you.
Fact # 3: I love using loads of spices when I cook…but I have no idea what I’m doing.
Food just tastes better when you properly spice it, or in my case just spice it at all. I have no idea what each one of the spices I own should taste or add to a dish but I just pick one based on color or smell and throw a bunch in. It’s worked out pretty well so far.
Fact #4: I have an older brother named Lee (short for Hartley).
My brother and I are very close and always have been. We went through a spirt during our childhood where we fought like cats and dogs, but before that and since then, we get along pretty well. I am so excited because I’ll actually be going home to Pittsburgh for the entire month of August for his wedding. Also extremely looking forward to finally having a sister!
Fact #5: My full name is Camden and I am named after Camden Town in London.
My parents went on a little trip to London roughly nine months prior to my birth and fell in love with a little town called Camden. My mom claims it was the most beautiful place full of the nicest people and she wanted a daughter just the same. So here I am! Hope I live up to it, Mom!
Fact #6: Turtles are my favorite animal.
I don’t know where the fascination with turtles came from but at some point in my childhood I became obsessed with them and my family became obsessed with buying me anything turtle related. It may have started from watching too much Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I have a huge box at my family home full of turtle sculptures, stuffed animals, jewelry, etc. I have never actually own a turtle which seems wrong in so many ways, but maybe someday!
Fact #7: I love DIY projects…but I’m not so great at them.
Finding something I love and recreating it in a less expensive way with a more personal touch is so fulfilling to me, unfortunately I am also extremely impatient. Almost all of my DIY projects have something wrong with them. Whether the paint isn’t fully covering it, or a leg is wobbly, I’d rather just get it done than for it to be perfect. It will however drive my insane that it isn’t perfect but not enough for me to take my time to make it right. Whoops!
Fact #8: I want to live in NYC before I die.
There is just something special about New York City that you can’t get anywhere else. Every time I’m there I just feel…more alive! I don’t think I would live there very long or raise a family in the city, I just want to spend even 6 month to a year living there and taking in everything the city has to offer!
Fact #9: I accidentally collect journals.
I love to write and organize my thoughts via pen and paper. I also find journals to be so beautiful so when I find a new one I love, I need to have it. This has resulting in my inability to fill one before I replace it with a new one. So scattered all over my apartment are half filled notebooks with everything from grocery lists to my deepest darkest secrets.
Fact #10: I intentionally collect Peter Pan books.
I became fascinated with the story and concept of Peter Pan. So much so, in fact, that I had the directions to Neverland tattooed on my shoulder. It is a simple reminder to myself to always have the heart of a child. Children aren’t afraid to try new things or worry about the future. They don’t see the world in through a cynical lens. This makes them so powerful, yet they lose that as they grow and learn. I don’t want to lose sight of that.
